World Middleweight Champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (48-2-2, 27 KOs) will make another defense of the Diamond WBC belt he won when he defeated Serhiy Dzinziruk back in March, 2011.  Stepping up to the challenge is Matthew “Mack the Knife” Macklin (28-3, 19 KOs) from Ireland.  The fight will be the main event of a stacked card taking place on March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day) at the theater in Madison Square Garden and is appropriately titled “The REAL Middleweight Championship – Get Your Irish Up”.

Martinez, arguably one of the top three best fighters in boxing, is the heavy favorite going into this fight and most fans expect “Maravilla” to have a comfortable night against the very game but over-matched Macklin.  The Argentinian fighter now residing in Oxnard, California has knocked out his last three opponents and if all predictions are correct, this will be his fourth.

Macklin is coming off a controversial loss in the hands of Felix Sturm, a fight that many fans and experts thought he won.  “Mack”, who regards himself as an all action come forward fighter, will need to have another impressive outing as well as some “Irish luck” to pull the upset.  Macklin is aware that he is in for a tough fight but sounds confident as he prepares to face a formidable champion.
“I am really confident about the fight, I think is coming at the right time for me…I am going to go in there and impose my style which is to go to war, and I am going to put that on him and make him fight my fight”, said Macklin in a recent interview.

Sergio knows he needs to win this fight to maintain his status as one of the elite fighters in the world.  But more importantly, winning this fight means getting the chance of finally fighting rising star Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for the real WBC Middleweight belt, same belt he was “separated” from when he was elevated to “emeritus champion”.

The WBC has cleared the way for this fight to take place after Chavez Jr. made a successful defense of his title on February of this year.  President of the WBC Jose Sulaiman also warned the young champion that failure to comply with the organization’s ruling could result in Junior being stripped.

“If a fighter doesn’t comply with our rules then he would be eliminated from our rankings.  If Julio doesn’t comply with our rules, then they will not laugh in our faces…I want to reconfirm that if Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. doesn’t respect the mandate of the WBC, then we will be forced to separate ourselves from his championship.” , said Sulaiman in a recent interview for the radio show “Noche de Boxeo”.

Martinez has chased Chavez Jr. for a while, and is very anxious for that fight to happen.  But on March 17th he needs to concentrate on defeating Macklin in order for that fight to materialize.

Serving as co-feature is the super middleweight 10-round fight “Bombs Away” which has all the ingredients to produce fireworks and the chance to steal the show.  Going head to head in a boxer vs. puncher fight is Edwin “La Bomba”
